Ruth Thomas
From Nature
June 7th -July 6th 2007

Ruth Thomas trained in Fine Art at Coventry and Leeds. Since 1985 she has exhibited in many venues in the UK and also in Spain, France and USA. She has worked to commission for private and corporate clients and her work is represented in public and private collections.

Most of Ruth’s prints are collagraphs, a print from a collage. They are original, hand-made prints, not reproduction prints.
A variety of materials can be used to make the printing plate including papers, card, fabrics, thread, tin foil, sand, grass, seeds and so on. The materials are glued onto a support such as mountboard. The plates are then sealed with white emulsion paint and acrylic varnish.

To print, ink is rubbed into every part of the plate and the excess wiped away, so that ink remains in the recesses of the plate but is largely removed from the surface. The plate is printed onto dampened printing paper, using an etching press.

“The mark of her work is to create using what normally goes unnoticed, to draw attention to something that often does not warrant attention by using it in another form. The results are often abstract and characterised by the use of heightened colour, and always enticing. The many layers to her pieces mean that every picture continues to hold the interest long after the legs have tired of standing before them.”
